MARY ON CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY
As a member of the State Board of Investment, what do you think we can do in
the area of corporate responsibility?
As a member of SBI, my primary responsibility is to protect the assets of
the more than 370,000 current and future retirees involved in the state
retirement system. SBI is one of the top 30 largest pension funds investing
over $54 billion and its investors can be proud of the continual track
record of protecting their assets and future income. That said, I believe
we can do several things such as joining with other institutional investors
to generate changes in corporate governance practices. This would include
requiring that the companies we invest in have independent board members,
expense their stock options and have separate audit and consulting
companies. To advance this agenda, I have joined with my fellow SBI members
in support of thorough review of our investment policy guidelines in these
areas.
